Goldsmith Ephraim Brasher struck this coin in 1787, years before the United States had an official mint — making it one of the earliest gold coins ever produced in the newly independent country, and one of the rarest.
The 2021 Heritage Auctions sale made it the most expensive gold coin ever sold outside the 1933 Double Eagle, and its status as a piece of pre-Mint American history gave it a story as valuable as the gold itself.
