Mercedes-Benz built exactly two 300 SLR Coupes in 1955 and never sold either one to the public — the automaker kept both in its own collection for decades, nicknamed after engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut, who reportedly used one as a personal road car.
In May 2022, Mercedes finally sold one of the two in a closed-invitation private auction held at its own museum in Stuttgart, obliterating the previous car-auction record by nearly $100 million in a single sale.
The buyer and the exact bidding process remain almost entirely secret, which only added to the mythology.
