Gross vs. Net Income
Gross is pay before deductions; net is what actually lands in your bank account.
Gross income (or gross pay) is the full amount earned before tax, insurance, retirement contributions, and other deductions. Net income (take-home pay) is what's left after all of that comes out. Job offers and salaries are almost always quoted in gross terms, which can overstate how much money is actually usable day to day.
Worked Example
A $75,000 gross salary might land around $57,000–$60,000 net after federal tax, state tax (where applicable), payroll taxes, and any retirement contributions — the exact gap depends heavily on where you live and what you elect to withhold.
